EVA AND FRANCO MATTES

2000 - 2003
Originally commissioned by the Walker Art Center and curated by Steve Dietz, Life Sharing by Eva and Franco Mattes (0100101110101101.org) was a radical gesture of self-surveillance. For three years, the couple made the contents of their home computer accessible to the public. All of the contents–including files, emails, bank statements, and so on–were available in real time to be read, copied, and downloaded.

Tracing You presents a website's best attempt to see the world from its visitors' viewpoints. By cross referencing visitor IP addresses with available online data sources, the system traces each visitor back through the network to its possible origin. The end of that trace is the closest available image that potentially shows the visitor's physical environment. Sometimes what this image shows is eerily accurate; other times it is wildly dislocated. What can a computational system know of our environment based on the traces we leave behind? Why might it want to see where we are?

Like many other machine vision datasets (e.g. ImageNet), Microsoft’s COCO image recognition dataset is based on photos culled from Flickr. The dataset’s true value derives from the 600.000+ segmentations manually created by Mechanical_Turk crowd workers, based on those photos from Flickr. With Segmentation.Network I created a piece in which all segmentations are played back in a random order, making visible some of the manual labor that goes into building artificial intelligence.

We are part of the privileged third of the world’s population that has access to the Internet. Teams at Facebook and Google are working on projects to build swarms of solar powered drones and balloons that would allow more people to connect to the Internet and take part in digital life. How to Appear Offline Forever explores visibility, labour and colonialism in a networked world, taking the endeavours of Internet drones as the starting point for intertwined stories happening in different places.

" According to psychologist and professor Larry Rosen , ‘We willingly push any and every button because we hope that it provides a squirt of dopamine for pleasure.’ And so, you will likely find yourself clicking the tantalising Useless Web button and BOOM a whole digital world of uselessness explodes (or rather, is opened tab by tab in your browser bar). Each time you press the button you’ll be taken to a different domain which hosts creative, silly and seemingly pointless content. " nudge

Comment Se Souvenir De Tout Pour (Quasiment) Toujours

and what is a computer ?
You have one choice. In front of you is a machine: if you put a coin in the machine, the other player gets three coins – and vice versa. You both can either choose to COOPERATE (put in coin), or CHEAT (don't put in coin)
